The "Long Brakes" Delusion: Why Drivers Ignore Lethal Mechanical Failures

In automotive mechanics, brake failure is rarely a sudden, unpredictable catastrophe. Modern vehicles give ample warning—spongy pedals, squeal sensors, and extended stopping distances—long before total hydraulic or mechanical collapse. Yet, every day, drivers get behind the wheel of multi-ton trucks fully aware that their braking system is compromised, hit the gas, and inevitably plow into another vehicle.

When the collision occurs, the immediate reaction of these drivers often defies logic: instead of rushing to check on the victim, they offer a casual mechanical excuse: "My brakes are long now."

Understanding this behavior requires looking at three psychological mechanisms: normalized deviance, cognitive detachment, and self-preservation bias.

1. Normalization of Deviance: The Gradual Drift

Brake wear happens incrementally. When a brake pedal begins to travel farther to achieve a stop—what drivers colloquially call "long brakes"—it rarely fails completely on day one.

This creates a phenomenon known in risk management as the normalization of deviance:

The Lesson


My reaction was not the friendly one when the driver gave us his silly excuse. The lesson here is that my brother in law stayed calm all the time, forced me to get into the car so he could deal amicably with the man and make sure his company paid all damages.
